A Brief Introduction

The Institute for East Asian Studies, Sogang University (SIEAS) was established in November 1981. It aims to promote and facilitate basic and applied academic research on politics, economies, societies, and cultures of East and Southeast Asian countries and regions, as well as to enhance public understanding. Since its establishment, the Institute has led East Asian and Southeast Asian studies in Korea, and it has played the role of a research hub, closely working with scholars, area specialists, research centers and public organizations in Korea as well as abroad.

  CLUSTER ACTIVITIES
- How has Southeast Asia been constructed and perceived in scholarship and public
..percept ion?

SIEAS held its first cluster conference under the theme of the Historical Construction of Southeast Asia on the 19th and 20th of March 2009. The two clusters, which were comprised of prominent international and domestic scholars, have conducted their own researches under two grand themes, "The Historical Construction of Southeast Asian Studies,¡± and ¡°Perceiving Southeast Asia,¡± during the year of 2009. The cluster conferences were a forum of fruitful discussions and ideas for the advancement of Southeast Asian studies.

- Formation of 2010 Cluster: Historical and Cultural Formation of Southeast Asia:
..External Influences and Indigenization

SIEAS has launched its second research cluster on March 2010. With Professor Shin Yoon Hwan as head, this cluster aims at researching, ¡°The Historical and Cultural Formation of Southeast Asia: External Influences and Their Localization.¡± Let¡¯s hear to the goal and scheme of this cluster.

  LECTURE SERIES
- Various Research Activities in 2010

Since last March, SIEAS has been holding various research seminars and workshops. Not only did SIEAS faculties but also foreign scholars who were visiting Korea provide interesting lectures and presentations on their own research topics. Let¡¯s pay attention to what sorts of interesting discussions and academic topics have been raised in these academic activities.
  PEOPLE
Inviting New Faculty Members

SIEAS has invited two new faculty members and one visiting scholar on February 1, 2010. We are proudly presenting their academic interests and experiences.
  JOURNAL
SIEAS is in the process of launching a new journal of Southeast Asian studies, (tentatively) entitled, International Journal of Southeast Asian Studies (IJSAS) in 2011. The new journal will be published by an internationally renowned publisher. SIEAS is also Calls for Papers for Journal East Asian Studies.
